Utah Salt Flats Racing Association Brings Thrills to Speed Enthusiasts

The Utah Salt Flats Racing Association (USFRA) is a premier organization in the world of land speed racing, and its events have been thrilling fans for years. Recently, the association held its World of Speed event on September 9-13, where several records were set by racers.

One of the most impressive achievements was made by Sullivan's streamliner Vesco Turbinator, which reached a speed of 437 mph to set a new record. Another notable performance came from Jeff Strasburg's Lindon Lakester, which hit an impressive 360 mph.

The USFRA has been hosting events at the World of Speed for years, and this year was no exception. The organization's president, Dennis Sullivan, explained that racers who participate in SCTA and Utah Salt Flats Racing Association events can only set national records, as their courses are international and have a history dating back to 1949.

However, USFRA events like the Bonneville Shootout, which is sponsored by Mike Cook, offer something unique. According to Sullivan, these events are the only ones where international records can be set. Unfortunately, this year's event was cut short due to inclement weather.

'We had one day of racing out there and it rained,' said Mike Cook, referring to the storm that forced cancellation of his Bonneville Shootout on September 9. Despite the setback, Cook remains hopeful that the event can be rescheduled for October if the salt dries out.

The uncertainty surrounding the weather has also raised concerns about the upcoming World Finals, which are sponsored by the Southern California Timing Association (SCTA). According to SCTA president Pat McDowell, there is a 99 percent chance that the event will be cancelled due to the high water table and lack of wind to evaporate it.

Racers are eager to finish the 2017 season on the Bonneville Salt Flats, but the late September storms have made it difficult. As the situation continues to unfold, fans can follow updates on SCTA's Facebook page and website for any changes or cancellations.
